This 75-minute documentary film demonstrates just how connected babies are to other people. Narrated by Suzanne, we are guided moment-by-moment through the subtle shifts in babies’ movements, expressions and attention. We observe babies in the most ordinary of activities: having their nappy changed, playing with their older sibling, meeting a stranger, catching sight of their reflection in a mirror. Once the pace of the interaction is slowed down, as we follow along with Suzanne’s observations, we begin to see the hidden sophistication of babies’ capacities, even at the youngest of ages.

The film is structured in six chapters, conceived as ‘dances’. Each begins and ends with commentary from some of the UK’s leading researchers in infant psychology, including Colwyn Trevarthen, Vasu Reddy and Jonathan Delafield-Butt.

The film is accompanied by a set of Guidance Notes that assist you in getting the very best out of your screening. It will suit the needs of professional settings, such as presentations and group discussions, as well as families. In fact, some of the most memorable feedback has come from the occasions when the film was purchased as gift for parents welcoming new babies into their lives.

The film was originally launched in 2011 and funded by the British Psychological Society.

Professional Recommendations:

  • “This film is beautifully made, a mind opener in our rational age. Suzanne Zeedyk builds on the scientific evidence showing that babies are persons from the start.  The film will inspire viewers to reflect on the innate wisdom of babies and to value the joy they bring when in our company.”
Professor Colwyn Trevarthen, Emeritus Professor of Child Psychology & Psychobiology, Univ of Edinburgh
  • “We love especially the chapter called ‘dance of the nappy’. It shows how important nappy changing is – that its not just a routine hygiene procedure or chore.  It’s a really important time for a baby to connect with parents. We want to encourage parents and carers to enjoy this contact time, to make it quality time. This film helps them do that.”

  • “As someone who teaches classes for expectant parents, I think this film is superb. For those who haven’t made the leap to parenthood yet, who are terrified, who have yet to fall in love with their child and who think diaper changing is something that must be endured, this film is just perfect.”
  • “I got a copy of your film for my daughter, who is pregnant with her first baby.  We had a spectacular evening watching it, and talking about the things she wanted to do to connect with the baby once it’s here.  The evening made me remember all sorts of things about my time with her as a baby that I had forgotten.”
