It is understandably uncomfortable to contemplate the idea that esteemed educational establishments could be contributing to the harming of children. That discomfort is precisely why we need to find the courage to ask the question. Is it really possible? Suzanne argues that the answer to that question is yes. She is eager to add her voice to the rapidly growing community of adults who are sharing stories of the distress they suffered as a child sent to boarding school.
The implications arising out of early boarding school harm are considerable. There will be adults carrying trauma, who are likely to need help with recovery. There will be children who are being harmed today, by modern boarding practices and policies. The political structures within British society will be riven with poor emotional intelligence and empathy, given how closely elite boarding school is linked with class in Britain.
Suzanne brings her knowledge as a developmental psychologist to these issues, and she values being able to encourage awareness about an area that has tended to remain separated from the wider childhood trauma movement. She is working to break down those barriers. The response from one commentator shows the power of these insights: “Carrying complex PTSD from childhood has huge policy and strategic implications for government and the corporate world, yet there seems to be so little public awareness of this issue. Thanks for the good work you are doing.”
Here are examples of work Suzanne has done to boost awareness of the emotional impacts of boarding school.
